Hyperian History Of The World (19th Century, Part 2)

Hegel wrote that “the history of the world is none other than the progress of the consciousness of freedom”. Indeed, Hegel was writing following the revolutionary events of the end of the 18th century, in which humanity began to awaken to the tyranny under which they lived and began to resist it. The 19th century certainly proved to be one in which the consciousness of freedom made great progress. Whilst Hegel’s philosophy provides us with a metaphysical explanation of this process, to see the real evidence of this process in action one ought to look at the art and creativity of that time, in particular, it’s music.

In the previous century music had reached dizzying heights of greatness in the works of Handel and Bach, Haydn and Mozart. Yet, for the most part, these composers were being commissioned to compose by their wealthy patrons and, as such, their music was being controlled by a powerful ruling class despite their great individual genius. Mozart had begun to challenge this with some of his operas having controversial subject matter which troubled the aristocracy.

In the 19th century, one composer managed not only to eclipse the talent and mastery of those great 18th century masters, but managed also to completely change the way in which composers composed, taking complete control over his own work, injecting it with a powerful sense of personality, a true expression of an individual progress of the consciousness of freedom. This was of course the great Ludwig Van Beethoven, perhaps the greatest composer who ever lived.

Beethoven perfectly embodied the enlightenment values of his time, which he poured into his music, as well as a great sense of the power of the individual to dazzle the world with the unlimited creative content of his mind. Beethoven knew exactly what he was capable of and didn’t allow anything to stop him and refused to compromise in order to ‘fit in’. Beethoven, through force of will, became the greatest master of music the world has ever seen, and his dazzling later works are all the more astonishing when one considers that, by that time, the composer had gone completely deaf.

“Oh you men who think or say that I am malevolent, stubborn, or misanthropic, how greatly do you wrong me. You do not know the secret cause which makes me seem that way to you.” These are the words with which Beethoven began his so-called Heiligenstadt Testament written in 1802. In this document, addressed to his brothers but not found until after the composer’s death in 1827, Beethoven reveals his anguish at the prospect of his oncoming deafness, a truly terrible prospect for a musician. Yet, though the letter reads almost like a suicide note, the great man evidently did not commit suicide (the letter itself states, “it was only my art that held me back”), instead he went on to achieve greater heights of artistic genius than perhaps any other composer in history.

Had Beethoven killed himself in 1802, he would have been nothing more than a footnote in musical history, known perhaps a great virtuosic performer of his day and as a composer who wrote a few notable works in the classical style of Haydn and Mozart, before an untimely death. But despite the prospect of his impending tragedy, the avoidance of which he knew to be impossible, Beethoven made the conscious decision to live on nonetheless. “I was ever inclined to accomplish great things”, he writes, showing that he knew in himself what heights he was capable of, and no physical ailment was going to stop him. Rather, Beethoven turned his disadvantage into a strength. Through his own mighty force of will, Beethoven ceases to be known merely as a virtuosic performer or as a composer imitating the styles of others, and instead rises above everything that has come before him. He uses his isolating illness to probe depths of the human psyche no musician had ever dreamt of.

Two years after the Heiligenstadt Testament, Beethoven had completed his third symphony, his epic ‘Eroica’. Twice as long as any symphony composed by anyone else before, this work would have baffled and amazed audiences in 1805, when it was first performed, with its impressive scale, force and power.

Isolated though he was, Beethoven was well aware of events going on in the world at the time. A practitioner of Enlightenment values, Beethoven had been a supporter of the French Revolution and had supported Napoleon in his early days, and it was to that world historic figure that Beethoven had originally dedicated the ‘Eroica’, that is, until he learned that Napoleon had crowned himself Emperor, in opposition to the revolutionary values that Beethoven also held. The original manuscript of the score still bares the scars of Beethoven’s wrath, with Napoleon’s dedication scratched out with such force as to tear the page. Instead, Beethoven dedicated the piece “to the memory of a great man”.

In this symphony, Beethoven celebrates the glory of the individual, the enlightened individual who stands in opposition to all the forces of endarkenment. The ‘Eroica’ of the title, the heroic individual, is one who makes themself all that which they have it in them to be.

When Napoleon’s French forces occupied Vienna, Beethoven’s wealthy patron, Prince Lichnowsky was entertaining some of them one night, and Beethoven was invited to attend the evening. When the prince asked Beethoven to play for them, Beethoven exploded into a rage, not wishing to be presented as an attraction to the foreign invaders. Beethoven makes his allegiance quite clear when he says to the Prince, “What you are, you are by accident of birth; What I am, I am by myself. There are and will be a thousand princes; There is only one Beethoven.”

Following this, Beethoven ceased to rely on patronage, instead taking control of his own career and making money through concerts and publications, no longer requiring wealthy patrons, as composers had done for centuries. Beethoven despised the wealthy elite, as shown by another famous anecdote. Beethoven was walking through the street with his friend, the great writer Goethe, when they came upon a group of aristocrats. Goethe stepped aside to allow them to pass, yet Beethoven continued on, forcing the aristocrats to move aside for him. He stopped further up the street to allow Goethe to catch up. Once he had, Beethoven said to him, “I have waited for you because I respect you and I admire your work, but you have shown too much esteem to those people”.

Beethoven made himself the greatest composer of all time and, despite becoming profoundly deaf, still managed to compose works of impossible brilliance, such as the Missa Solemnis and, in particular, his ninth symphony. Completed in 1824, this symphony was even longer than the Eroica and, in its final movement, even utilised singers for the first time ever in a symphony, which was usually an instrumental work. Yet Beethoven had long wished to set to music a poem by the poet Schiller called the Ode to Joy and he did so in this symphony. The poem celebrates joy and calls for universal brotherhood and is very much in accordance with Beethoven’s enlightenment values.

Despite its great length and incredible innovations, the symphony was a massive success. At its premier, Beethoven, completely deaf, insisted on conducting the orchestra despite not being able to hear them. This was allowed to occur, yet the lead violinist actually took control and had the orchestra follow his lead. As a result, the orchestra finished before Beethoven, who was still waving his arms around as the audience began to applaud. As they rose in a huge standing ovation, Beethoven had to be physically turned around by one of the singers in order to accept the adulation.

Beethoven represents the culmination of all the developments in music which preceded him, and also the root of all which followed him. Music for the remainder of the century, and beyond, continued to follow the trajectory which he had begun. Contemporary to Beethoven was Franz Schubert, who, aside from being perhaps the greatest songwriter who ever lived, also managed to compete with Beethoven with a few of his symphonies and other works.

The 19th century also saw opera reaching its greatest heights. One composer in particular took it to extreme levels. Recognising that opera was the true artistic heir to the great synthesis of the arts which had been the tragedies of ancient Greece, Richard Wagner applied the same ideas to his operas. Wagner devised the concept of Gesamtkunstwerk, or total-artwork, in which several art forms all come together in one single work. Wagner didn’t just compose the music for his operas, but also wrote all of the words (unusual for composers of the time), directed all of the onstage action and even designed the sets and costumes himself.

Wagner broke free of all of the traditions of opera and his gargantuan works would consist of huge unbroken streams of music rather than being broken down into shorter sections as in other operas. The culmination of Wagner’s ideas comes in his epic Ring Cycle. Based on Norse mythology, this work consists of four operas to be seen on four consecutive evenings for a total of about fourteen hours of music. To stage this absurdly ambitious work, Wagner had to actually build his own opera house, as no existing venue had the means to put on such a work.

Wagner’s true genius, however, was to reach deep into the collective unconscious of humanity and draw forth the archetypes and structures of our mythology and put them into musical form. Wagner tended to represent each archetype, characters, objects and even ideas and feelings, with little melodies or leitmotifs which would recur throughout the opera in many different forms. This technique gives his music great psychological power and is a technique utilised by many other composers, particularly modern film composers.

Despite the epic scale of the Ring Cycle, Wagner’s most deeply spiritual work is probably his final opera, Parsifal. Based on the medieval legend of the knights of the Holy Grail, Parsifal is an immensely powerful work with profound power. If it were possible for a piece of art to contain all of the secrets to enlightenment, then Parsifal is arguably the one which comes closest.

The 19th century produced an astonishing number of great composers. Aside from Beethoven, Schubert and Wagner, there was also Berlioz, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Verdi, Bruckner, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and many others. Human creativity was on fire and it was all down to the decision that Beethoven made in his Heiligenstadt Testament, the decision to go on and actualise all of his potential, regardless of everything which life threw at him. As Hyperians we all must make similar decisions. We can disappear into obscurity, or we can pour out the contents of our souls and light up the world with our creative brilliance. Beethoven was just one individual. Imagine what we could do if we all united.

The philosophy of the British empiricists in the 18th century as well as that of Immanuel Kant suffered from a lack of mathematics. Leibniz had been more than aware that his philosophy required further mathematical rigour in order to escape from the mire of metaphysical interpretations and attain to the purest of reason. Unfortunately, the 18th century represents the fracture of intellectual pursuits which we still see to its extreme in the academic world today. Leibniz had been a great polymath, excelling in all manner of disciplines and combining them all together in order to further his own understanding of everything. Newton, on the other hand, had been a great mathematician and scientist, but had had little philosophical understanding, thus failing to see the contradiction of combining empiricism with rationalist mathematics. The British empiricists were the opposite of this, great philosophers but with little mathematical knowledge.

This problem is also shown by looking at the mathematicians of the 18th century. Whereas Leibniz had been a great mathematician as well as a great philosopher, who had pioneered new mathematical disciplines in order to express his philosophy mathematically, the mathematicians who followed him and built on his work were great mathematicians but were not philosophers. Therefore, although they provided great mathematical insights which would have helped Leibniz enormously, no philosophers of the time thought to utilise their work.

The greatest mathematician of the 18th century was Leonhard Euler. Euler made major developments in almost all areas of mathematics, from trigonometry and calculus to algebra and geometry. Building on Leibniz’s pioneering work in calculus, Euler made major developments to analysis and power series. He also discovered the base of the natural logarithm, a number which is still known as ‘Euler’s number’, or just ‘e’.

Using this number, Euler explored ways of expressing logarithms with power series and then began to utilise complex exponentiation, utilising the imaginary constant, ‘i’. Through this work, Euler discovered an astonishing result. The power series expressions for exponential functions simplified to expressions which Euler noticed were equal to trigonometric functions. Amazingly, he realised that when ‘e’ was raised to an imaginary power, the result was equal to the sum of the cosine function and the sine function with an imaginary coefficient. His remarkable formula is expressed as: ‘e^ix = cos x + i sin x’.

For mathematicians, this was an exciting result, although they only saw it in terms of the abstract mathematics that they were studying. Philosophers, who ought to have realised the true implications of this formula, were either ignorant or indifferent to these mathematical developments. Leibniz may well have made the connection, but, alas, he was long dead before Euler made this discovery. Yet this formula, and what it revealed, was exactly what Leibniz had been seeking in his pursuit of the mathematics necessary to underpin his philosophy.

Euler knew his discovery was astonishing, yet even he did not realise just to what extent. Unbeknownst to him, Euler had in fact discovered the mathematical expression of the most very basic element of reality, the ‘arche’ of the ancient greeks, the foundation upon which all of reality is built. Unfortunately it would take centuries before this was realised by anyone, after further developments in mathematics and philosophy and the combination of it all together by great, unknown geniuses working behind the scenes.

But back in the 18th Century the world was still very much awakening into a much more scientific outlook on things, with these developments in mathematics greatly assisting scientists in their empirical attempts to explain the world around them. If only the philosophers had made similar use of mathematics…

This mathematical shift in human thought of the time was also felt in other areas, most interestingly in music. In the previous century, baroque composers such as Monteverdi had taken music to new heights of creativity, peaking in opera, yet the 18th century would see music taken much higher. It had been known since Pythagoras that music was a very mathematical discipline and the rules of harmony that had been established over the centuries could almost be said to obey mathematical laws, as if a composer could, in theory, compose beautifully harmonious music simply by making mathematical calculations.

This mathematical approach to music reached its zenith in the late baroque in the first half of the 18th century, chiefly in the work of its key composers, the Italian Antonio Vivaldi, and the Germans, Georg Frideric Handel and, greatest of all, Johann Sebastian Bach. Handel, who ended up based in London, wrote many operas and other concert works, yet his specialism was the sacred Oratorio, a format in which Handel was able to combine operatic solos, complex, contrapuntal orchestral passages and huge, glorious choruses.

Handel’s ideas were best realised in his monumental oratorio ‘Messiah’. Although ostensibly a christian work celebrating Jesus Christ, this was really a transcendent work, one whose biblical text is arranged in such a way as to abstract the christian message so that it can easily be reinterpreted in a spiritually uplifting way, with the concept of the ‘messiah’ being viewed as a divine state which we can all attain, and which Handel gives us a glimpse of in musical form. After composing the famous ‘Hallelujah’ chorus, the work’s emotional high point, Handel was found in his study in an almost trance-like state and, once roused, he gestured at the score and stated, “I thought I saw the face of god!”

While Handel became the most famous composer in Europe, his great contemporary, Johann Sebastian Bach was a much more esoteric composer, keeping himself shut up in his little german church playing the organ and composing a huge body of amazingly complex works. His compositions took the art of harmony and counterpoint to perhaps their greatest heights. Whilst most composers occasionally composed two melodies playing together to give a little colour to the music, Bach took counterpoint to extremes, often having, three, four, five, even six melodies all playing at the same time yet without losing the sense of perfect harmony. Listening to some of Bach’s contrapuntal works is almost like listening to the sound of beautiful mathematical equations in operation.

But, like Handel, Bach also composed large-scale sacred works. His greatest oratorio, the St Matthew Passion, is an intense, deeply powerful work in which Bach throws everything he has into the mix, creating a musical extravaganza even more complex and varied than any opera of the time. This work was surpassed in his later, greatest masterpiece, the Mass in B minor, completed shortly before his death in 1750. Alas, Bach, who perhaps had the most complete grasp of musical theory of any composer of all time, surely one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time, was not very popular during his life and it took several centuries for his greatness to be appreciated and for him to be placed in the highest pantheon of composers, where he truly belongs.

Bach and Handel brought the long Baroque age of music to a close. Following their complex and heavily ornamented music, composers began to streamline their music, creating a wonderfully elegant style which we know today as the ‘classical’ period. In this period, opera was reformed by the works of Christoph Gluck and many of the great musical forms, such as the concerto, the string quartet, and especially the symphony, were perfected by Austrian composer Franz Josef Haydn.

Haydn’s beautiful compositions were seeing him well on his way to becoming the most famous composer since Handel, but then his genius was soon eclipsed by a mere child, a prodigy who would take the musical world by storm unlike anyone else had ever done or has ever done since, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Mozart was perhaps the most naturally gifted musician of all time. He began to play the piano at the age of three and was composing melodies at five. His father began parading him around Europe giving concerts to the astonishment of all who saw him. At eight he wrote a symphony and at fifteen, a full opera. Mozart soon became famous all over Europe as a composer as well as a performer, becoming the greatest virtuoso pianist of the time. After settling in Vienna in 1782, Mozart took his composing to its greatest heights with his great operas, The Marriage Of Figaro, Don Giovanni and the wonderfully esoteric The Magic Flute. He also composed grand symphonies, eclipsing Haydn’s work in that genre and his piano concertos would draw huge crowds who were amazed by Mozart’s elegant composition as well as his stunning ability to improvise on the themes of the works.

In 1791, Mozart was commissioned by a mysterious unknown source to compose a Requiem mass. After having scored a little over half of the work, Mozart tragically died at the age of just thirty five, leaving one of his students to complete the great Requiem, perhaps the greatest choral work since Bach. In his short life Mozart composed a huge amount of music, seemingly able to churn out beautiful compositions without really trying. When he did try, however, his music achieved true glory, with levels of beauty and elegance never matched by anyone else, a huge amount of passion and also a great sense of humour. Mozart eclipsed every one of his contemporaries, even the great Haydn, who reemerged only after Mozart’s death to compose his greatest work, the oratorio The Creation.

The music of the great composers of the 18th century is the perfect soundtrack to the enlightenment values of the time and the scientific and mathematical advances that were being made resulting in some of the greatest artistic creativity since the renaissance. Yet towards the end of the century, political events would occur which would cause a great shift in human consciousness, resulting in a new age of passionate and romantic creativity. Music had become a powerful force in the world, which was able to bask in the transcendent glory of the genius of Handel, Bach, Haydn and Mozart.

A few hundred years ago, a person would have to be a member of the upper classes in order to have access to a teacher, or even the privilege of accessing information and tools to learn with. If you were lucky enough to have access to a library; you would also have to know how to read the books. Public literacy was not commonplace until very recently; in the US in the 1920’s, only 70% of people knew how to read!
The modern world is very different. Only 100 years later and look at how far we’ve come. We’re now at a point in history where, almost everybody has access to a tiny computer in their back pocket, that not only links them to people and places all over the world instantaneously, but also to the vast field of collective knowledge that makes up the internet.
Want to learn something new, anything at all? Google it. Watch a Youtube tutorial. Look it up on Reddit. You can find anything at all that you want. There are endless resources and ways you can access information to teach yourself virtually any skill or knowledge that you could possibly think of.

If you don’t study, don’t read, don’t have time, then you’re missing what the entire essence of being Hyperian is.
Hyperians embrace the struggle to overcome obstacles, because we know that is the very thing what will help us grow into better, stronger, and more actualized minds. A lot of people are unfortunately conditioned that they are not smart, or can’t learn certain things, like math. Don’t let a bad experience or a bad teacher ruin your passion for learning. Being smart is not like winning the lottery. Smart people understand that they can choose to make themselves smarter, and realize that such a thing is possible. Don’t underestimate yourself.
We are Hyperians. We choose to actively learn from those stellar minds who came before us, those who peered farther and deeper into reality than ever before. Even, and especially if that knowledge is complex, challenging and difficult to grasp at first. We want to become better, smarter and more actualized too, and we want everyone to join us.

Hyperian History Of The World (18th Century, Part 2)

Philosophically speaking, 17th century rationalism had flourished in continental Europe, beginning with Descartes and culminating with Leibniz going into the 18th century. In parallel to this course, there had also been a strain of philosophy running in Britain which opposed rationalism. This was empiricism.

If the continental rationalists followed the example of Plato, then the British empiricists followed the example of Aristotle. Beginning with Francis Bacon, the empiricists were ‘outward’ looking philosophers, much more like scientists, who looked out into the physical world around them and sought to explain it based solely on their experiences of it.

Towards the end of the 17th Century, it was John Locke who, disregarding rationalism completely, said that humans can only have knowledge that is ‘a posteriori’ i.e. based upon experience. He described the human mind as a ‘tabula rasa’, a blank slate completely empty at our birth but then becoming populated with ideas based only on the experiences we have of the world.

Locke’s empiricism was materialist, philosophically accompanying the empiricist, materialist science of Newton. Going into the 18th century, Irish philosopher and Anglican bishop George Berkeley feared that Locke’s philosophy would lead to atheism and so proposed an alternative version of empiricism which was idealist rather than materialist. According to Berkeley, matter only exists when it is being perceived by an observer. Without observation there is no matter at all. So what stops the room ceasing to exist when we exit it? Conveniently, Berkeley said that god was constantly observing everything in the universe, thereby stopping things from ceasing to exist when we stop observing.

But the most extreme empiricist of the 18th century was Scottish philosopher David Hume. With Hume empiricism descends into absolute skepticism. Given that, according to Hume, all our knowledge derives from our experiences, from what we observe, it becomes impossible to provide any rational explanation of anything, as reason supposes causation and, as Hume insists, causation cannot be observed, therefore we can never really be certain of anything. Hume’s philosophy leads towards complete uncertainty about anything whatsoever.

Of course, another way of looking at Hume’s philosophy is to say that it proves that empiricism is clearly a false ideology which will never provide any certain knowledge about the universe. Unfortunately, Hume did not see it this way, concluding rather that no philosophy could provide any certain knowledge about the universe, as he had presupposed that empiricism was the only relevant philosophy.

Hume’s philosophy was the culmination of British empiricism the way that Leibniz’s was the culmination of continental rationalism. However, the next great continental philosopher, the German Immanuel Kant, was far more influenced by Hume than by Leibniz. Inspired by a desire to resolve Hume’s skeptical conclusions, Kant attempted to sculpt a grand system which would synthesise the two parallel strains of philosophy.

Whereas Descartes divided everything into mind and matter, Kant divided everything into the phenomenal and the noumenal. The phenomenal realm corresponded to the physical realm of matter, the realm that we experience with our senses, that we can see, hear, touch and feel. The noumenal realm corresponded to realm of mind, like Plato’s realm of the perfect Forms, the true realm of things as they really are in themselves. However, in line with empiricism, Kant suggested that we can only ever experience the phenomenal realm and never experience the noumenal realm, as our minds only interpret the noumenal realm and it is this interpretation that creates the phenomenal realm that we experience.

Kant had far more rigorously defined all of these issues philosophically but had still reached the conclusion that we can never know how the universe actually is. This was due to his ignoring of the mathematical side of things. Kant’s attempt was valiant, yet he ought to have ignored British empiricism and focused on Leibniz’s rationalism and its need for mathematical rigour. Ingenious though his philosophy was, Kant’s failure to apply mathematics to it is what resulted in his conclusion that we can never truly know the universe.

Nonetheless, Kant became one of the most influential philosophers of the modern age and his ideas, along with those of the British empiricists, would influence the science which had begun with Newton. As such, science became completely based on empiricism and materialism, Newton was a hero, as were Kant and Hume, with Descartes and Spinoza being reduced to academic curiosities and Leibniz all but forgotten.

Nonetheless, this age of enlightenment was clearly an improvement on the preceding dark age of christian domination. Despite ignoring the wisdom of the great rationalists, the world of the 18th century seemed to be brightening and great wonders were still to come, both artistically and politically.

Predatory, free-market capitalism is a fucking monstrosity; a greed-fueled, soul-crushing, earth destroying monstrosity.. Everything capitalism touches turns to ashes. It is through capitalism that the rich elite are able to steal and accumulate unimaginable wealth and power (created by the people – that’s you!). They maintain their family dynasties through inheritance; you’re not part of the club and you never will be. Extraordinarily, common people admire the rich and long to be one of them.
According to science, “nothing” existed before the big bang. Not nothing as in, say, “zero” but nothing as in, non-existence. How absurd. Also, you have no mind, no soul, and free will is just an illusion. Oh, and one more thing.. life is meaningless, your life has no purpose and when you die you’ll just blip out of existence like that – and you won’t remember a thing! Now don’t you worry your pretty little head about it.
…Ugh, just kill me now and get it over with. Science is nothing more than the dogmatic religion of materialism. I defy you to find a more bleak position on life.
Eastern religions are based in mysticism and advocate for “enlightenment”, a kind of detachment from the world through meditation. Abrahamic, monotheistic religions are propagated through systems of generational childhood brainwashing. Children are told that they will burn for eternity in hell if they do not believe in God. They become people who are slaves to their god and never become gods themselves.

This is an unacceptable state of affairs.

Rationalism obliterates each of these flawed systems in one fell swoop. That’s where Hyperianism comes in.
We advocate and work towards the replacement of science with logic, reason, and ontological mathematics; the science of the future; the science of mind itself. Without mathematics, science has no legs to stand on, yet it can’t explain what math actually is and why it works. Hyperians know that math is fundamental to existence itself.
We also advocate and work towards replacing capitalism and systems of privilege with a Grand rational government of merit; a Meritocracy. This goal is a long way off, but in the meantime, we support the movement towards democratic socialism – this is a big step in the right direction.
In addition, we seek to abolish systems of religious brainwashing, and replace them with knowledge – proof – of your own inner divine nature. For those who are unaware, we have a FB group called Logical Youth which offers support and community to young rational minds who are trapped in religious households.

Hyperianism and ontological mathematics proves that we are eternal minds; we do not live just one life. If the conditions are sufficient for one of something to exist, then there is no sufficient reason why an infinite number of those same things could not exist. We all live endless lives. Your true purpose in life is to actualize your inner potential, your Innerstar, to become a talented and powerful mind that reaches towards Godhood itself.
Only you can create yourself by exploring your skills, igniting your passions and mastering your will. Then take your amazing self out into the world to unify with others who stand with our Sacred Cause.
